Have you heard of sea moss?
I hadn’t until a few weeks ago when I was at a large farmers market in Ft. Lauderdale. That’s when I noticed several vendors selling it. All of them boasted a whole host of benefits.
I didn’t purchase any as I decided to make a mental note and do some research when I got home.
Well, I became distracted with some other projects and honestly forgot all about it.
It wasn’t until this week, after watching a video on hormones, that it was brought to my attention again. You see, I noticed someone in the comments saying that sea moss had helped them.
My interest was piqued again. And since I was near the computer I started to just see what a quick Google search would return.
So it’s certainly a new, trendy ingredient/product. It’s also known as red seaweed, Irish moss or Chondrus crispus. And the scientific research is a bit slim.
Here are some of the claims that have been noted:
- Stimulates thyroid function
- Aids in weight loss
- Reduces inflammation
- Improves digestion
- Boosts immune system
- Supports fertility
- Builds muscle
- Is heart-healthy
- Protects against Parkinson’s disease
- Anti-tumor
- Promotes healthy skin and hair
When I looked further into some of the research I did notice that much of it notes the compound in the moss – fucoxanthin – which has been studied for years. I’m very familiar with fucoxanthin so it makes me wonder if this is being rebranded. I’m not really sure yet. And I personally will be waiting for more research before I try it.
If you decide to try some (readily available online) it’s best to look for organic. And make sure that it has been tested to not have heavy metals or pesticides. Anything coming out of the ocean can be contaminated and is always a concern.
